288-KA - 17oz "Kasuri" Slub Selvedge Denim - Regular Straight Fit

ONI
$ 295.00

When we visited Oishi-san in Japan, we were gifted with little bits of knowledge from one of the most skilled makers of denim, ever.  He must have a pension for flair because he saved this denim to be the pièce de résistance. When he pulled this ultra-slubby, jacquard-like selvedge from his bag, you could probably see our hair blow back from across the restaurant. He told us that as a gift for making the trip to see him in Japan, we were going to be able to carry this wonderful selvedge. Oishi-san dropped a little piece of knowledge when we asked about the purple and gold selvedge that I think only we know. The fabric was inspired by Kabuki theatres — more specifically the patterns in the fabrics used as drop curtains. And if you search Kabuki Fabric, you'll see that this fabric has a similar makeup. It's very hard to see in denim form, but if you stare long enough, you'll start to see a geometric almost honeycomb-like pattern, unlike anything we've ever seen in our denim tenure. The slub — uneven, knotty yarn — has been woven in what mimics a jacquard-like pattern. It simply has never been done, and our little imaginations are going wild with what the fades will look like on this loosely woven denim. To circle back around to our question, he mentioned that the traditional colors of the Japanese theatre were purple and gold. So this detail pays homage to its inspiration in more than one way. It is an understatement to say that we are honored to be one of the few select retailers chosen to carry this Kasuri denim.

Fit Notes: Shop owner Tommy is wearing a size 34 in this Regular Straight Fit. It was honestly a little tight, and normally he can wear a size 33 in this cut. Please, size up at a bare minimum twice. If you don't trust us, check the size charts. Oishi-san reached out to us a few days ago to apologize for the shrink rate on these. Luckily, it was accomplished in production and not after so you don't have to worry about them acting like shrink to fit denim. Just pay very close attention to the size charts. If you go up, and get the waist right everything else will fall in line as these are a classic cut with plenty of room in the thighs and straight leg from the knee to the hem. Tommy is 5'10," 170lbs, with a 32-33" waist and would likely buy the 36 in these.
